The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia have entered into a formal agreement to work together to support the State Government to create a combined new university.

Adelaide University will unlock the benefits of increased collaboration and scale, making transformational investments in both teaching and research more feasible, and will be a stronger attraction for domestic and international students and creative, talented staff.

To support the creation of the new university, the South Australian Government has committed $464.5 million over four years, including:

    • a $200 million research fund
    • a $120 million student support fund to assist students from the regions or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education
    • $114.5 million for the acquisition of Magill and parts of the Mawson Lakes campus
    • $30 million to attract international students.

National university sector leader Professor Emeritus Ian O’Connor AC has been appointed Higher Education Independent Advisor, responsible for providing expert advice on matters relating to the establishment of the new Adelaide University.

Professor O’Connor will engage with key stakeholders and provide independent advice and recommendations to the South Australian Government, including on the measurement and achievement of proposed economic benefits, possible impacts on staff and students, and risk management.
